Background
Leo’s Pet Care is an Indianapolis veterinarian servicing the Indianapolis and Carmel areas. Leo’s Pet Care is owned by Dr. Greg Magnusson and is named after his son and inspiration, Leo Magnusson. The practice and the website have only been in operation since August of 2010, but Dr. Greg has grown the practice significantly through Internet marketing and SEO.
Challenges
Like many small business owners just starting out, Dr. Greg needed to figure out how to find new customers fast. He decided not to use “traditional” methods and did not spend the money for a listing in the phone book. The challenge was that he didn’t know much about Internet marketing and how to show up in search engines but was willing to put in the time and some money to do so.
Actions Taken
Dr. Greg used any downtime he had with his practice to research how he could show up in search engines and worked hard to make the necessary site changes, started blogging and really focused on getting links from directories and other link opportunities. Dr. Greg recommends that other small businesses should be sure to “create consistent information for all of the sites, focus on key directories such as Yahoo! and CitySearch, and illicit clients to provide reviews on these sites.”
Dr. Greg signed up for DIYSEO in November 2010. He uses it to manage many aspects of his SEO efforts in one place including the ongoing monitoring of his keywords. He also really focuses on the Competitor Links section to provide insights into top links that his competitors are getting.
Results
Even though he’s only had a website for seven months, Dr. Greg has been able to get into the Top 5 listings for 4 of his 5 target keywords. By getting found in search engines and continuing to monitor his reputation online, he has been able to significantly grow his practice!
